Tony Feher, Cisco Jiménez, Joe Sola, Emi Winter, and Jessica Wozny

Me gusta el plástico includes the work of five artists from different generations and distinct practices from Mexico and the United States, and will be on view at the Museo de los Pintores Oaxaqueños (MUPO), in Oaxaca, Mexico from 15 October until 30 November 2011. Presented in the context of the Oaxacan cultural festival Encuentros, the exhibition brings together significant groups of artworks in many media and establishes unexpected relationships among the works and the artists. Included are Tony Feher, New York; Cisco Jimenez, Cuernavaca; Joe Sola, Los Angeles; Emi Winter, Oaxaca; and Jessica Wozny, Oaxaca.

By insinuating passion for ordinary material, the exhibition title (I like plastic) is intended to signal an attitude towards things rather than a specific medium. In addition to plastic, the artworks featured include ceramics, videos, photography, oil and acrylic on canvas and paper, woven and knitted textile, wood, tape, found objects. One artist even becomes an actor in his own scripts, using Hollywood filmmaking techniques as a medium to speak about the artist and his creative process. Uniting the five artists across this spectrum is a light touch: they approach their work with a sense of immediacy, irreverence, and even humor. The choice of material is often rooted in the artist’s origin and working context, and from the deceptively blunt juxtapositions emerge surprising relationships of form and gesture.

Each artist’s work occupies its own gallery space, installed in close collaboration with the artists and incorporating many site-specific contributions. The sequence of individual presentations allows the works to be seen on their own terms, while the relationships among the groups emerge over time. All of the work presented in the exhibition is on view in Mexico for the first time. Internationally recognized artist Tony Feher (b. 1956) created an ephemeral site-specific installation specifically for the exhibition, comprising plastic bottles, twine, blue tape, and other common materials. Cisco Jimenez (b. 1969) is among the most important and influential Mexican artists of his generation. A selection of over 20 ceramics dated 2001-2011 is accompanied by a large, temporary mural and several photographs from 2001 – the artist’s only work in that medium and previously only shown in Canada and the US. Joe Sola (b.1966), whose video works and performances have been presented at major museums internationally, debuts A short film about looking (2010) alongside the earlier work St. Henry Composition (2001). Emi Winter (b. 1973) presents a group of paintings on canvas dated between 2005 and 2011, some of which were exhibited in Europe and the US but have not been shown in Mexico before. Alongside the paintings are recent weavings created in collaboration with artisans in Teotitlan del Valle. Jessica Wozny (b. 1978), a German-born artist who is a long-time resident of Oaxaca, realized a room-sized installation that combines over 15 individual mixed media sculptures with a group of acrylic paintings on paper.

The exhibition is organized by Steffen Böddeker and Luis Hampshire.
